Based off my experience, it pretty much feels like black and white in Nepal with people either being hospitable, kind, and helpful or completely unhelpful, disinterested, disengaging, ignorant, and misleading.
You can walk around a bus park for 15 minutes asking questions about bus schedule, departure, etc.and you will get five different incorrect answers or receive a look with absolutely no concern and disregard. People are always laughing when I ask a serious question or they just shrug their shoulders and do not respond at all. I understand there is a language barrier at times, but many do not put in any effort even with just listening to a simple name of a city. In India, people would do the laughing and act confused, but they would at least TRY to help and care way more about tourists. It is very frustrating for a tourist and the money incentive component is not good either.
Similar to Laos, people are poor so they are stimulating the economy through tourism. People have an interest in what you can do for them and how they can benefit. For example, I wanted to go to the beginning of the mountain trek and they guy said it will cost you fifty rupees for directions and he was serious. I say this based off my experience and this statement is not generalized to everyone.
On the other hand, you have people in Nepal that follow their Hindu beliefs of treating the guest as God. They are giving, helpful, loving, and just wonderful people. These people have really made my trip to Nepal. If it was not for these individuals and families I would really begin to question why I came to Nepal in the first place, especially when I did not do Annapurna or Everest, but I want to wait to go with my wifey and friends rather than just going alone or with strangers. Obviously, this is not good for me with my sense of direction, but this is off topic.
